READ CAREFULLY: Registration Methodology Participants are required to hold an equivalent of a B1 level/upper intermediate level of English in order to participate in the course. Thus, it will be assumed that those who register for this activity will present the expected communicative level to attend it successfully. (No language placement test is needed or will be applied.) There are 10 vacancies to the course. Content Teaser Is the concept of health universal, or is it culturally grounded? How to respond to people’s health-related needs while respecting their values and preferences? What does culture mean, and what impact does it have on healthcare? This hands-on, practice-oriented course aims to help you gain awareness of the complexities involved in providing healthcare in an increasingly culturally and linguistically diverse world. Throughout the various activities and units, you will have the opportunity to develop cultural and linguistic awareness, as well as communication tools commonly used in the healthcare field. Participants will have the opportunity to: - discuss and analyze a number of definitions of culture in the context of health care - be exposed to situations that implicate cultural variety in health care - learn from empirical data through interactions in the field of study - adopt a practice-based approach to the use of communicative tools and linguistic repertoire in health care contexts. Learning materials include: - Audiovisual resources (videos, podcasts, audio recordings) - Readings - Interactive activities (short quizzes, student surveys and reflective exercises) Tools which will be used: - Virtual walls - Collaborative platforms for mind-mapping and blog entries - Video-conferencing platforms The course is made up of 30 hours, organized as such: -10 hours of self-study and asynchronous activities - 14 hours of live online and campus hybrid: - 6 hours for self-reflective activities as part of the portfolio (assessment) ATTENTION TO THE COURSE SCHEDULE! -Participants are only expected to be present at the synchronous and hybrid sessions (24 hours). -There are a number of asynchronous sessions. (These sessions' precise time is only included because SIUR demands it. The activities can be done at the time of the participant's choice.) VERY IMPORTANT!!!! - The synchronous and hybrid sessions will take place on Tuesdays (from mid-October through December) at 12:00 (in October only because of the time zone (POA-Brussels) and at 12:30 p.m. starting on October 28th through December. Classes on Tuesdays from 12:00 to 01:30 pm (until Oct 21st) Classes on Tuesdays from 12:30 to 2:00 pm (from Oct. 28th to Dec. 16th) CERTIFICATES Participants must attend a minimum of 75% of the course and complete the requested activities to be eligible for a certificate from SIUR. ASSESSMENT TASKS This course does not adopt tests as assessment tools, but rather a symposium, debates, discussions, and a written log for reflection. COURSE METHODOLOGY Interactive student-centered tasks will be adopted.

This course is an introduction to the importance of interculturality in healthcare. Together, we will discuss a broad range of topics and address communication challenges that can arise from interactions with patients: - Multicultural aspects and health issues - Communication in health issues - Global perspectives on health care - Emerging and hidden identities in the South American context versus the European one - Language & inclusion versus exclusion By the end of the course, participants will be able to: - Understand the different aspects of culture and its importance in healthcare; - Develop cultural awareness for health care settings; - Acquire tools and strategies for a reflective approach in future health-related practices; - Gain communication skills and language awareness for inclusion in health contexts

This is a proposal is part of a series of international exchange courses, jointly organized by UFCSPA and the University of Mons (UMONS) in Belgium, targeting the UFCSPA community, the UMONS community, and a group of European university partners of UMONS. For that reason, the main language of instruction will be English, and the other national languages of the alliance will be used to varying degrees throughout the course
