Psychotherapy is a potential intersubjective and interpersonal space for the development of client narratives, offering a reflective process that facilitates meaning-making related to their experiences and suffering. Therapeutic skills directly impact the client's narrative process; therefore, the relationship between therapeutic competencies and the client’s productive narrative shifts has become a central focus in both research and practice. In recent years, researchers have increasingly directed their attention to the micro-interactional dynamics within therapy sessions to deepen our understanding of the psychotherapeutic process and improve the training of psychology professionals for clinical work.
This event is part of the research project of the Aletheia Group, coordinated by Professor Lucia Marques Stenzel, which aims to analyze psychotherapeutic skills and productive narrative-emotion changes simulated in role-play sessions. The objective of the course is to enhance the training of the research team in the use of the Narrative-Emotion Process Coding System 2.0 (Angus Narrative-Emotion Marker Lab, 2015). The NEPCS 2.0 was created by Professor Lynne Angus and translated and adapted in Brazil by Professor Lucia Marques Stenzel. The research group will conduct a data analysis of a session in collaboration with Professor Angus, with the intent of improving the training of the research team in the use of the instrument for future analyses of psychotherapy sessions.
This project includes an international partnership with Professor Lynne Angus from York University (Toronto, Canada). Professor Angus is the creator of the NEPCS coding system, a standardized and empirically validated measure of narrative and emotional processes in psychotherapy sessions, which has been widely applied in psychotherapy research studies in European countries, as well as in Canada and the United States—demonstrating a significant association with clinically relevant changes in clients across various treatment approaches and clinical samples. To date, published studies have investigated clinical samples of English speakers. The partnership established in this project aims to expand the application of the NEPCS to Portuguese-speaking client samples and researchers in Brazil, for further investigations of important cross-cultural factors and the development of culturally sensitive treatment guidelines and training programs. This project is a continuation of the work already done in collaboration with this researcher on the translation of the NEPCS measure into Portuguese (link para o artigo: https://pepsic.bvsalud.org/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&pid=S0103-56652023000200407&lng=pt&nrm=iso)
